Indian Airports on High Alert Amid India-Pakistan Tensions

NEW DELHI: With the rising tensions between India and Pakistan, airports around India were put on heightened alert with respect to security, even though flight operations are likely to remain largely unaffected. "There are some possibilities for short disruptions of flight schedules," officials informed on Friday, May 9, "but air traffic operations are mostly normal."

Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) operating Indira Gandhi International Airport even went on social media and stated, "Delhi Airport operations remain normal" but added "some flight schedules may be impacted due to evolving airspace conditions and heightened security measures."

The Indian authorities have taken measures by tightening the security protocols at all major airports, anticipating any least possibility of threats to airspace due to the military standoff. They have stepped up surveillance, passenger screening, and air traffic monitoring, especially in the northern areas near the India-Pakistan border.

Airlines have also been instructed to remain abreast of any temporary restrictions that might be enforced in the airspace, while passengers are being advised to coordinate with their airlines regarding real-time status on flights before proceeding to the airport.

The development relates to India's larger strategy to safeguard internal security and public safety at critical infrastructure spots such as airports, with rising levels of cross-border hostilities looming as the backdrop.

Closely monitoring the situation, authorities stand ready to respond at short notice should the security environment change. At this point, air travel is safe, albeit with some minor delays possible due to precautionary checks and evolving conditions.
