Interim Government Considers Banning Awami League Amid Public Pressure

Dhaka: The interim government is actively weighing the possibility of imposing a ban on the Awami League, following growing demands from the public and several political groups, the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing announced on Friday.

The Press Wing’s statement, published on the official Facebook page of the Chief Adviser of the Government of Bangladesh (GOB), emphasized that the government has initiated discussions with various political parties on the matter. The final decision will be made through further consultations, it added.

The announcement comes as the National Citizen Party, along with other organizations, staged a protest outside the Chief Adviser’s official residence, the State Guest House Jamuna, urging the government to ban the Awami League. Protesters have accused the party of engaging in authoritarian practices and being involved in various criminal activities.

The government’s statement also highlighted a recent report from the United Nations, which raised concerns about alleged criminal activities involving leaders and supporters of the Awami League. The authorities are said to be considering this report as part of their decision-making process.

In a related move, the government has already banned the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), the student wing of the Awami League, designating it as a terrorist organization under existing laws. The Press Wing further disclosed that amendments to the International Crimes (Tribunals) Act are being considered to take action against any organization found guilty of crimes against humanity.

The Press Wing also addressed rising public anger over the recent overseas trip of former President Abdul Hamid, assuring that legal measures will be taken against individuals involved in facilitating the travel if any wrongdoing is found.

"We urge everyone to remain patient until a final decision is made," the statement concluded, noting that the government remains committed to upholding the rule of law and ensuring accountability.
