Mid-Age Weight Loss Cuts Chronic Disease and Mortality

Helsinki: A new study finds that losing about 6.5% of body weight in middle age can cut long-term risks of chronic diseases and death. Researchers at the University of Helsinki analyzed data from roughly 23,000 people across three cohorts (1964–73, 1985–88, 2000–13).

Participants were grouped by BMI change—loss, gain, or stable—and their health records were tracked for 35 years. Those who lost weight without surgery or medication had lower rates of heart attack, stroke, cancer, asthma, and COPD.

They also had reduced all-cause mortality. The benefits stemmed from diet and exercise shifts since the study period largely predated modern weight-loss drugs. Experts note that the findings highlight the power of behavioral change, though BMI doesn’t capture body composition nuances or fat distribution.

While the observational design limits causal claims, it underlines the value of sustainable lifestyle choices. Dr. Timo Strandberg's research was published May 27 in JAMA Network Open, with commentary from Dr. Aayush Visaria on its strengths and limitations.
