OIC Condemns Strikes on Iran, Vows Diplomatic Push to De-Escalate Tensions

Ankara: The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) announced the formation of a ministerial-level contact group to engage with global and regional actors in efforts to ease tensions following recent U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities.

In a statement issued after a meeting of foreign ministers in Istanbul, the 57-member bloc strongly condemned what it described as "Israeli aggression" against Iran, expressing deep alarm over the escalation and calling for an immediate halt to such actions.

The OIC urged the international community to take firm steps to deter future attacks and hold Israel accountable for violations of international law. Although the main joint declaration did not directly reference the U.S. strikes, a separate 13-point resolution adopted during the session condemned both U.S. and Israeli operations targeting Iranian nuclear infrastructure.

Expressing full support for Iran, the resolution called on the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to officially denounce the attacks and refer the matter to the United Nations Security Council. The OIC also accused Israel of committing "barbaric" acts and breaching global legal norms.

The group reiterated its demand for Israel to immediately sign the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and submit its nuclear sites to IAEA oversight. Israel, widely believed to possess nuclear weapons, has said its recent military actions aimed to prevent Iran from acquiring similar capabilities.

The OIC’s resolution further emphasized Iran’s legitimate right to self-defence and its authority to take all necessary steps to safeguard its sovereignty and citizens against future hostilities.
