Abu Dhabi Opens First Early Detection Alzheimer’s Centre

UAE: Abu Dhabi has launched the region’s first specialized centre for early detection of Alzheimer’s disease, offering cutting-edge blood-based screening for individuals starting at age 40.

This new facility, known as the Centre for Advanced Neuro Biochemical Diagnostics, was introduced during Abu Dhabi Global Health Week and is operated by the National Reference Laboratory (NRL), a part of the M42 Group, in partnership with global neurology diagnostics leader Neurocode International.

This marks a significant move in the UAE’s fight against Alzheimer’s, the most common form of dementia, which accounts for 60–70% of cases worldwide. Traditional methods for diagnosing Alzheimer’s often rely on invasive spinal fluid testing, which delays detection and treatment. By introducing novel blood test diagnostics, the new centre allows for earlier intervention, improving long-term outcomes and slowing the disease's progression.

With more than 57 million people affected globally as of 2021, Alzheimer’s is a growing concern. Experts explain that mood changes and behavioral symptoms can appear long before memory loss becomes obvious. Early diagnosis offers a better chance at managing symptoms and prolonging independent living for patients.

Dr. Laila AbdelWareth, CEO of NRL, described the centre as a game-changer in global neurological diagnostics. It will be guided by prominent figures like Prof Henrik Zetterberg and Prof Kaj Blennow, pioneers in Alzheimer’s biomarker research. A full-time lab-based neurology professor, trained in dementia at Gothenburg University in Sweden, will also lead operations.

Neurocode International CEO Dr. Hans Frykman said this partnership establishes one of the world’s most advanced clinical labs for brain disorders. It aims to support doctors across the Middle East and beyond in making faster, more accurate diagnoses of Alzheimer’s and related conditions.

In a broader healthcare innovation push, the UAE is also advancing AI-based projects like ‘Synthetic Memories,’ developed by Emirates Health Services and the Mohammed Bin Rashid Centre for Government Innovation. This AI-powered initiative helps patients with memory loss by recreating realistic simulations of past events to slow cognitive decline and improve emotional well-being, reinforcing the UAE's leadership in ethical, tech-driven healthcare solutions.
