Category 5 Cyclone Zelia Approaches Australia's Pilbara Coast

Canberra: Western Australia is bracing for the arrival of Tropical Cyclone Zelia, a Category 5 storm expected to make landfall late Friday in the Pilbara coastal region.

Authorities have warned of potential devastation, urging residents to take precautions as emergency services prepare for significant impacts.

The Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) reported that Zelia is moving slowly but remains extremely powerful, with wind speeds exceeding 280 km/h (174 mph). The cyclone threatens critical infrastructure, including major ports that facilitate iron ore exports, as well as oil and gas processing hubs.

Port Hedland, the world's largest iron ore export port, has been forced to close, with concerns that its older buildings may be particularly vulnerable to storm damage. The ports of Dampier and Varanus Island are also set to shut from 6 p.m. local time on Thursday (10:00 GMT) as a precaution.

Darren Klemm, head of Western Australia’s Department of Fire and Emergency Services, emphasized the seriousness of the situation, urging residents to follow official guidance. "The intensity of Tropical Cyclone Zelia presents a major risk to lives and property," he said during a press briefing.

BoM meteorologist Dean Narramore warned of worsening conditions, with rainfall already reaching 80-100 mm (3.1-3.9 inches) and heavier downpours expected in the coming hours. The risk of flash flooding and riverine flooding is increasing, adding to concerns for residents along the Pilbara coast.

Emergency services have issued evacuation advisories, particularly for people living in caravans or older, poorly maintained homes. Those in vulnerable areas have been urged to relocate to designated evacuation centers for safety.

Authorities continue to monitor the cyclone’s path, with further updates expected as Zelia nears landfall.
