Islamabad: Islamabad police have decided to launch a crackdown against the local leadership and workers of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) ahead of the party’s planned nationwide protest on February 8.
PTI is staging protests across the country on the first anniversary of the general elections, which the party claims were not conducted fairly.
A high-level meeting, chaired by Inspector General (IG) of Islamabad Police Ali Nasir Rizvi, finalized a strategy to prevent PTI’s potential protest in the federal capital. Senior officers have been tasked with arresting party leaders and activists.
During the meeting, all Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs) were directed to compile lists of active PTI leaders and workers in their respective areas. Officials also reviewed cases of PTI members who are already wanted by law enforcement agencies.
IG Islamabad ordered the formation of a special team of female police officers for handling female protestors. Additionally, plainclothes personnel will be deployed to monitor and control any demonstrations.
A decision regarding the closure of Islamabad’s entry points will be made based on the evolving situation.
