Home Minister's Plan: Tightening India-Bangladesh Border

Dhaka: Karnataka's Home Minister G Parameshwara raised the matter of tightening the India-Bangladesh border and simplifying the rules for direct deportation of illegal immigrants by the Central Government. He was responding to BJP MLC P.H. Purjar, who alleged that over 15,000 illegal Bangladeshi immigrants had resided there for more than two decades in Vijayapura district.

He acknowledged that lots of illegal immigrants exist from Bangladesh and Pakistan across Karnataka and other parts of the country, but he declared that the total numbers could be more than the number given by the official statistics. "The subject is so sensitive that while we cannot ask all for documents, the central government must intervene to strengthen the border as the Indo-Pak border," he added during the discussions.

The Home Minister to the state council, it was informed that authorities have recently identified and deported 33 illegal Bangladeshis. He pointed out that a similar exercise has been undertaken with respect to 10 Pakistani nationals illegally residing in Karnataka. The issue of illegal procurement of Aadhar cards and Ration Cards despite language and physical differences was also raised, hinting at the ease with which these people manage to sidestep the official systems.

Purjar suggested verifying the birth certificates and school transfer certificates of suspected illegal immigrants, but Parameshwara said this verification was not enough. He strongly underlined the need for more stringent regulations at the border and a streamlined process of direct deportation for the illegal migrants by the central government to ensure that these miscreants could not avail the legal routes of bail.

Furthermore, Parameshwara reminded the Council about the big narcotic bust in Mangalore on March 16, where contraband worth Rs 75 crore was seized, and made a mention of the fact that illegal migrants from Africa are also availing loopholes. He concluded that direct deportation would be the solution to all of these problems.
