Rawalpindi: Former Prime Minister and founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Imran Khan, has accused Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir of subjecting his wife, Bushra Bibi, to retaliatory actions and mistreatment during her incarceration.
In a statement issued from his official Twitter account on Saturday, Khan, currently imprisoned in Adiala Jail, alleged during a conversation with lawyers and select media representatives that General Asim Munir harbored a personal grudge against his wife following his removal from the post of Director General of Inter-Services Intelligence (DG ISI) during Khan's tenure as Prime Minister.
“I had removed General Asim Munir from his position as DG ISI, and in response, he tried to reach out to Bushra Bibi through his own sources, saying he wanted to speak to her about the matter,” Imran Khan stated. “However, Bushra Bibi clearly refused, telling him she had no involvement in such matters.”
According to Khan, this refusal led to what he describes as a campaign of vengeance by the army chief, resulting in Bushra Bibi’s continued imprisonment and alleged mistreatment.
“For the past 14 months, Bushra Bibi has been unjustly jailed and subjected to inhumane conditions. This is driven by General Munir’s personal vendetta,” he claimed.
He further alleged that efforts to break his spirit were being carried out by targeting his wife in ways he said were unprecedented, even under previous military regimes.
“In the past four weeks, I haven’t been allowed to meet my wife,” Khan said. “According to jail regulations, I was supposed to meet her yesterday. Even with a court order and a scheduled meeting in place, the authorities did not permit it.”
The former premier condemned what he called blatant disregard for legal orders and human rights, calling the treatment meted out to his wife a form of political and personal retribution.
