Pakistan Marks 27 Years as a Nuclear Power: President and PM Issues Special Message On Youm-e-Takbir

Islamabad: Pakistan on Tuesday commemorated the 27th anniversary of becoming a nuclear power, with President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif issuing special messages to mark Youm-e-Takbeer – the day the country conducted its first nuclear tests on May 28, 1998.

President Zardari reiterated the nation’s commitment to safeguarding its sovereignty and regional integrity. He described the acquisition of nuclear capability as a “wise decision to ensure peace,” emphasizing that Pakistan’s nuclear deterrent guarantees both national independence and security.

In his address to the nation, President Zardari congratulated the people of Pakistan, recalling that on this day the country demonstrated its nuclear capabilities and achieved strategic defense power. He paid tribute to the scientists, engineers, and both civilian and military leadership who played pivotal roles in developing the nuclear program.

Zardari also honored the legacy of the late Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, who laid the foundation of Pakistan’s nuclear program, stating that the decision to become a nuclear power was not merely a technological achievement but a strategic choice to preserve peace through strength. “In light of evolving regional security dynamics, our nuclear deterrent remains a credible minimum defense capability,” he said.

He affirmed that Pakistan seeks peace, not war, and remains committed to peaceful coexistence and adherence to international laws. On this Youm-e-Takbeer, he urged the nation to renew its pledge to defend national sovereignty and regional integrity.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also extended greetings to the nation on Youm-e-Takbeer and paid rich tribute to the architects of the nuclear program. Reaffirming Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to freedom and sovereignty, he said the nation's joy has been amplified by recent victories.

Referring to the recent 6–10 May conflict with India, the Prime Minister said, “With the grace of Allah, Pakistan emerged victorious in this righteous battle imposed by India.” He recalled that India challenged Pakistan’s security and sovereignty with five nuclear tests, but Pakistan responded with six tests on May 28, 1998, turning itself into a nuclear state under the leadership of Nawaz Sharif.

Shehbaz Sharif hailed Nawaz Sharif for standing firm in the face of economic sanctions, pressure, and threats. “He made Pakistan’s geographical frontiers permanently invincible,” said the Prime Minister.

Highlighting the symbolism of the nuclear tests, he said, “The cry of ‘Allahu Akbar’ from the mountains of Chaghi still echoes as a solemn national pledge.” He likened the current unity against recent unprovoked Indian aggression to the historic resolve of 1998.

The Prime Minister extended special appreciation to Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan, scientists, and engineers for their immense contributions to the nuclear program. He also saluted the armed forces, national institutions, and all contributors to the nuclear project, emphasizing their critical role in safeguarding the country’s nuclear assets.

Shehbaz Sharif concluded by stating that Youm-e-Takbeer symbolizes national unity and a firm declaration that Pakistan will never compromise on its freedom and sovereignty.
