Putin and Trump May Hold Talks in Coming Months, Says Senior Russian Lawmaker

Moscow: Russian President Vladimir Putin and former U.S. President Donald Trump could meet as early as February or March, according to Leonid Slutsky, chairman of the State Duma’s International Affairs Committee.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Slutsky revealed that preparations for the potential meeting were in an “advanced stage,” though he refrained from specifying an exact date. “Let the leaders prepare thoroughly,” he stated, adding that further details would be announced soon.

The Kremlin confirmed on Wednesday that contacts between Russian officials and Trump’s team had recently intensified. Meanwhile, Trump claimed over the weekend that discussions were ongoing between the U.S. and Russia regarding a resolution to the war in Ukraine but declined to confirm any direct communication with Putin.

Last month, Putin expressed willingness to meet with Trump, saying he was open to discussions on Ukraine and other matters of mutual interest.

According to Slutsky, the meeting could address key global issues, including the Ukraine conflict, tensions in the Middle East, and the broader international landscape. His remarks followed a closed-door briefing by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov at the State Duma, as reported by Kremlin-aligned Telegram channels.
