Washington: U.S. President Donald Trump sharply criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin after Moscow unleashed what Ukrainian officials described as the most extensive aerial attack since the war began, involving hundreds of drones and missiles.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said Putin had “gone absolutely CRAZY” and hinted at possible new sanctions against Russia.
The overnight offensive saw Ukraine under siege for a third consecutive night. The Ukrainian air force reported that Russia launched 355 drones and nine cruise missiles, striking multiple regions across the country. According to military sources, it was the largest drone assault of the war so far.
“Something has happened to him. He’s gone absolutely CRAZY!” Trump wrote, referring to Putin. “He wants ALL of Ukraine, not just a piece of it… if he does, it will lead to the downfall of Russia!”
Trump did not spare Ukraine's leader, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, either. He criticized Zelenskiy’s tone, claiming the Ukrainian president’s remarks were counterproductive. “Everything out of his mouth causes problems… it better stop,” Trump said.
The Kremlin, in response to Trump’s comments, dismissed them as emotional. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the current circumstances had led to heightened emotional reactions from leaders around the world.
Meanwhile, the Ukrainian military reported damage in five locations, though specific military losses were not disclosed. In Odesa, a 14-year-old boy was injured, and residential as well as industrial buildings were hit in western Ukraine.
Moscow claimed the barrage was in retaliation for recent Ukrainian strikes on Russian civilian targets and insisted it was aimed solely at military infrastructure.
Zelenskiy, while not responding directly to Trump, said in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that the international community appears more focused on talking with Putin than on holding him accountable. He reiterated that force and stronger sanctions are the only ways to deter Moscow.
Trump, speaking to reporters in New Jersey, questioned Putin’s mental state, saying, “What the hell happened to him? He’s killing a lot of people. I’m not happy about that.” He suggested that more punitive measures against Moscow could be on the table.
The Ukrainian government reported that the weekend’s bombardment included at least 367 drones and missiles, killing at least 12 people, including three children in the Zhytomyr region.
While Trump has continued to call for an end to the war, peace talks have stalled, and the conflict appears to be escalating. Russia continues to push forward in eastern Ukraine amid drone warfare and intense frontline combat.
Moscow maintains that its actions are part of a “special military operation” aimed at countering NATO threats, while Kyiv and its allies condemn the invasion as a war of aggression.
