Turkey Positions Itself as a Pillar of Stability Amid Global Tensions, Erdoğan

Antalya: At the Antalya Diplomacy Forum, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan asserted that Turkey plays a vital role in maintaining European security and navigating growing international unrest. Addressing a gathering of global leaders and diplomats, Erdoğan emphasized Turkey’s strategic importance, especially in light of escalating global tensions and waning transatlantic alliances.

"European security cannot be considered separately from Turkey," he stated, highlighting Ankara’s readiness to contribute more actively to the continent’s stability.

Erdoğan used the platform to promote Turkey’s role as a mediator in geopolitical hotspots such as Ukraine and Syria. He noted Ankara’s unique position in maintaining diplomatic ties with both Kyiv and Moscow, even as hostilities between the two continue. He also expressed optimism about future U.S.-Turkey relations, particularly under a potential second Trump administration, citing his personal rapport with the U.S. president.

"We anticipate strong and wide-ranging cooperation with the U.S. during President Trump’s next term," Erdoğan said, underscoring the potential for enhanced bilateral ties.

On the topic of trade, Erdoğan commented on the ongoing tariff disputes triggered by Washington, saying Turkey is navigating the situation carefully to avoid economic fallout. Despite new U.S. tariffs, he expressed confidence that Turkey would benefit from the emerging global trade dynamics.

Turkey’s regional influence was also a key theme. In Syria, where Turkish-backed forces recently gained ground, Erdoğan affirmed Ankara’s commitment to preserving the country's territorial integrity, citing coordination with key powers like the U.S. and Russia. His remarks came as Syria’s new president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, attended the forum.

However, Erdoğan did not shy away from criticism of Israel, particularly over its military actions in Gaza. He described Israel's behavior as "state terrorism" and questioned the legitimacy of its conduct during conflict.

Meanwhile, Erdoğan faces rising domestic pressure following the imprisonment of his main political challenger, Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, which has sparked widespread protests across Turkey.
