UN Urges India and Pakistan to Exercise ‘Maximum Restraint’ Amid Rising Tensions

New York: The United Nations has called on both India and Pakistan to show “maximum restraint” in light of recent developments following a deadly attack in Pahalgam, Indian-administered Kashmir.

Speaking at a press briefing, UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, confirmed that the Secretary-General has not made direct contact with either government over the past 24 hours. However, he emphasized that the UN is “closely monitoring the situation with concern.”

The UN has condemned the Pahalgam attack, urging both nations to ensure the situation does not escalate further. “We believe that meaningful bilateral engagement is key to resolving any issues between India and Pakistan peacefully,” Dujarric said.

Meanwhile, the escalating tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors also surfaced during a U.S. State Department press briefing. In response to a journalist's question about whether the U.S. believes Pakistan is responsible for the recent attack, and whether the U.S. is playing any diplomatic role to ease tensions, spokesperson Tamie Bruce referred to an earlier statement.

She reiterated that President Trump and Secretary Robo have made it clear that the United States stands with India and strongly condemns all forms of terrorism.

Bruce added that the U.S. is “monitoring the rapidly evolving situation” and stated, “We are not taking any position on the status of Kashmir or Jammu. That’s all I can say at this point.”

When asked whether President Trump would once again offer to mediate between India and Pakistan as he did during his previous term, Bruce declined to comment. “As I mentioned earlier, the President, Secretary, and Deputy Secretary have made their stance clear,” she said.
