A brutal murder took place in Brooklyn at Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue Station: a woman died when the perpetrator burned her alive on a subway car stopped at the platform. The police have arrested a man in connection to the incident, raising the consciousness of society and the police force.
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch described the crime as "one of the most depraved crimes one person could commit against another human being." She said that the victim was waiting at the station for the F train when a man came up to her and, without saying a word, lit the girl’s clothes with a lighter. "It became fully engulfed in a matter of seconds," Tisch said. Even as officers moved around frantically to put out the fire, the woman succumbed to her injuries.
Witnesses said that the scene was disorganized and terrifying. "I heard screaming, and then I saw the flames," one passenger reportedly told investigators. The other witness who was on the platform during the period of the attack narrated, "It was like being in a nightmare.” He immediately jumped up and said with disbelief, “I can’t believe someone would do that.”
Local media have not yet reported the name of the victim, and the police are still searching for the possibilities of the cause of the attack. This suspect, whose identity has not been released, is currently detained as the police try to establish the sequence of events to this dreadful act of aggression.
