U.S. and China Hold “Constructive” Maritime Security Talks in Hawaii

U.S. and Chinese militaries held frank maritime security talks in Hawaii, discussing naval encounters, regional tensions, and restoring military communication.BEIJING, Nov 22 (Reuters) – The U.S. and Chinese militaries held maritime security talks from November 18-20 in Hawaii, the Chinese navy said on Saturday. The meetings, described as “frank and constructive,” are part of the Military Maritime Consultative Agreement (MMCA) working group, which meets twice a year to discuss military issues. Chinese officials said the discussions focused on the current maritime and air security situation, typical naval and air encounters, and ways to improve professional and safe interactions between the two militaries. China also criticized U.S. freedom-of-navigation operations in the Taiwan Strait and South China Sea, calling them “infringement and provocation.” The talks come amid heightened U.S.-China tensions, with the Pentagon seeking greater transparency on China’s military modernization and nuclear capabilities. U.S. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth previously raised concerns over Chinese activity near Taiwan and in the South China Sea. A follow-up meeting is scheduled for 2026, the Chinese navy said.
