February 12, 2025, Through the Absher platform, the Saudi government has launched a ground-breaking tool that enables citizens to provide passports to adopted family members. The goal of this project is to improve the rights of adopted people in Saudi society and expedite the adoption procedure.

The Saudi Passports Directorate formally announced the new service, which aims to make it simpler for families to get necessary travel documents by facilitating the issuance of Saudi passports for adopted children. Applicants can apply for passports for their adopted family members by logging into their Absher accounts and going to the "Family Member Services" section.

Key points

  • Eligibility: Adopted family members without a registered national ID are the only ones eligible for the service.
  • Requirements: In order to receive documents, applicants must make sure that their adopted family members reside in the Kingdom and have a registered Wasel address.
  • Application Process: Instead of physically visiting government offices, users can fill out the application online. This is in line with the Kingdom's larger initiative to improve accessibility to public services and undergo a digital transformation.
  • Passport Validity: The issued passports can be renewed via the same portal once they expire, which is five years.

The Saudi Passports Directorate's Director, Mohammed Al-Harbi, stressed the significance of this program in fostering inclusion and assistance for adoptive families. "This service not only simplifies the passport issuance  process but also reinforces our commitment to ensuring that all individuals, regardless of their background, have access to essential services," said Al-Harbi.
