AHMEDABAD: A world-first water positivity has been achieved by Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL), giving it the title of the first Water-Positive Renewable Energy IPP. This achievement was certified by Intertek, an international assurance agency, after a very rigorous audit of 103 sites of AGEL and 85 water conservation projects.
AGEL certainly put the global bar in environmental stewardship very high by achieving this milestone well ahead of its initially targeted date of FY26. Water positivity means AGEL now gives back more water to nature than it uses for its operations-a well-worthy realization for an industry that has its operations in scarcely water-endowed areas like the Thar Desert and Khavda in Gujarat.
By implementing waterless robotic cleaning of solar panels, rainwater harvesting, and restoration of 85 traditional ponds, AGEL has not only side-stepped water scarcity but also provided water to over 123,000 people living in drought-prone areas. By way of robotic cleaning alone, more than 54 percent of AGEL plants save approximately 546 million liters of water annually that would fill up about 467 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
AGEL had originally planned for 200 MW of capacity to be water-positive by FY23 but having surpassed that target, the company has extended its efforts to water-positivity for its entire portfolio-a year ahead of schedule. It is here that one can see the beautiful story of sustainable uplift, thus bearing witness that clean energy need not be realized at the cost of any depletion of scarce water resources.
Today, AGEL stands as a water-positive, plastic-negative, zero-waste-to-landfill company in energy promotion of conserving water as true climate leadership for all out there in the world.
