Afghanistan’s Role to Be Highlighted at Russia’s Security Conference

Moscow: Russia has emphasized that developments in Afghanistan are not merely regional matters but are tied to the country’s broader global strategic interests.

Sergei Shoigu, Secretary of Russia’s Security Council, announced that Afghanistan will be among the key topics at the upcoming International Security Conference in Moscow, set for May 27–29.

Shoigu stated that Russia's global interests span from Afghanistan and the Middle East to Syria, the Arctic, and the Baltic region, as well as relations with Iran, Africa, and Latin America. He noted that strengthening partnerships with neighboring states and organizations like the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), and the Eurasian Economic Union will also be crucial points of discussion.

The conference comes amid improving ties between Kabul and Moscow. Recently, Russia’s Supreme Court paused the classification of the "Taliban" as a banned organization, and Zamir Kabulov, Moscow’s special representative for Afghanistan, paid an official visit to Kabul.
