The first skate park in Baghdad was just opened, which is a big step forward for the city's young people, who have long wanted a safe place to skate. The park, which was formally opened on February 1, 2025, is regarded as a ray of hope for young skateboarders in Iraq and is situated within the Ministry of Youth and Sports complex close to Al-Shaab International Stadium.
With the help of the German and French embassies, this facility was created with the goal of giving skaters who used to practice in open spaces a safe space away from potential hazards including car crashes and police harassment. "Now, we have a safe space, and I hope this is just the beginning," said Mohammed Al-Qadi, 19, one of the young skaters who voiced their excitement.
It is anticipated that the skate park will promote increased youth skating involvement, especially among women, who frequently encounter social disapproval when engaging in such activities. With a dedicated training space, 23-year-old skater Rusul Azim expressed her desire to compete globally. With the park's launch, Baghdad is moving toward more urban planning that incorporates recreational areas geared toward young people.
This skate park represents a new era of possibilities for Baghdad's youth as the city continues to rebuild from years of conflict and instability. Many anticipate that it will lead to additional infrastructure development and the formation of a national skating federation, which could result in tournaments abroad.
