Brasilia: Brazil has officially granted diplomatic asylum to Nadine Heredia, the wife of former Peruvian President Ollanta Humala, following her conviction for accepting illegal campaign contributions.
The Peruvian Foreign Ministry confirmed the development late Tuesday, stating that arrangements are being made to ensure Heredia and her son's safe passage out of the country.
The announcement came shortly after a Peruvian court sentenced both Humala and Heredia to 15 years in prison for receiving illicit funds from a Brazilian construction firm during political campaigns. While Heredia awaits relocation to Brazil, Humala is currently serving his sentence in prison.
The high-profile case is part of a broader anti-corruption crackdown that has implicated several Latin American political figures in recent years.
