India Aims to Finalize EU Trade Deal by Year-End, Modi Says During Cyprus Visit

Nicosia: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Monday that New Delhi is working towards concluding a free trade agreement with the European Union by the end of 2025. His statement came during an official visit to Cyprus, where discussions also focused on expanding bilateral ties and broader regional connectivity.

Speaking alongside Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides, Modi highlighted the significant potential for deepening economic cooperation with the Mediterranean island nation. “We are striving to conclude a mutually beneficial India-EU trade agreement by the end of this year,” Modi stated.

The visit is part of India’s ongoing push to strengthen its global trade footprint. Modi also reaffirmed India’s commitment to the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor, a proposed sea and rail trade route aimed at connecting South Asia with Europe via the Gulf. “We believe this corridor will be a catalyst for peace and prosperity in the region,” Modi said, referring to the initiative amid mounting tensions in the Middle East.

Cyprus, a member of the Commonwealth and a long-standing partner of India, expressed readiness to play a strategic role in enhancing India’s access to European markets. President Christodoulides said Cyprus could serve as a key transshipment hub and gateway to Europe for Indian trade.

Looking ahead to 2026, when Cyprus will hold the rotating presidency of the European Union, Christodoulides emphasized that fostering stronger ties with India will be a top priority during its term.
