OTTAWA: Canada is set to introduce 25% tariffs on C$155 billion ($107 billion) worth of U.S. imports starting Tuesday if the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump proceeds with its proposed duties on Canadian products, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Monday.
In an official statement, Trudeau detailed that the initial phase of the tariffs will target C$30 billion in U.S. goods immediately, while the remaining C$125 billion worth of products will face tariffs in 21 days.
"Our tariffs will stay in effect as long as the U.S. trade measures remain in place. If the U.S. does not withdraw its tariffs, we are actively consulting with provinces and territories to explore additional non-tariff responses," Trudeau stated.
