Ottawa: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has strongly criticized U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to impose a 25% tariff on Canadian imports, calling it a “foolish move” that threatens economic stability. He reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to protecting its economy and announced retaliatory tariffs in response.
Trump’s new tariffs, which also apply to Mexican and Chinese imports, have sparked concerns about escalating trade tensions between the two North American neighbors. Trudeau warned that a trade war would be damaging for both countries and accused the U.S. president of attempting to “completely destroy” Canada’s economy to make it easier for the U.S. to assimilate the country.
“This will never happen. We will never become the 51st state,” Trudeau asserted. “It’s time to take firm action and prove that no one wins in a fight against Canada.”
In response, Trump took to Truth Social, referring to Trudeau as the “Governor” of Canada and warning that any retaliatory tariffs from Ottawa would be met with even higher tariffs from Washington. He defended his trade policies as necessary to protect American jobs, manufacturing, and national security, citing concerns over illegal immigration and drug trafficking.
