Canadian Mental Health Experts Raise Alarm Over Rising 'Political Anxiety' Ahead of Elections

Canada: Mental health experts are warning about a surge in "political anxiety" as the federal election campaign nears its end. The divisive tone and non-stop rhetoric of this election season have left many feeling overwhelmed. According to the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA), political anxiety is real, but it is also manageable with the right steps and awareness.

Helen Fishburn, CEO of CMHA Waterloo Region, stressed the importance of setting boundaries on media consumption. Speaking to 570 NewsRadio, she advised limiting exposure to constant news updates, especially negative ones, as they can worsen anxiety. “If you have a news channel running 24/7, it doesn’t help. Setting limits is key to protecting your mental well-being," she explained.

Fishburn pointed out that political anxiety isn’t limited to those deeply involved in politics or news. Even grounded, everyday individuals are feeling the strain after years of continuous challenges. No matter the age or stage of life, the emotional toll of the political climate has become difficult to ignore, making self-awareness and coping strategies more important than ever.

The CMHA listed several symptoms of political anxiety, including trouble sleeping, intrusive thoughts, emotional eating, distancing from others with different views, and in extreme cases, thoughts of self-harm. Thankfully, simple self-care routines like taking walks, getting fresh air, and staying connected to positive activities can help recharge mental energy.

For those struggling with overwhelming feelings, CMHA offers free support programs like My Path, which requires no diagnosis or referral, and the 24/7 crisis hotline (1-844-437-3247). Fishburn encouraged anyone experiencing severe stress to reach out for help early, emphasizing that managing mental health during high-pressure times is essential.
