Islamabad: Online ride-hailing company Careem has announced that it will discontinue its ride services in Pakistan starting July 18, 2025, citing ongoing economic challenges in the country.
Careem CEO made the announcement through a post on LinkedIn, describing the decision to withdraw ride-hailing services from Pakistan as "extremely difficult." He acknowledged the tough economic climate in the country as a major factor behind the move.
In addition to the LinkedIn announcement, Careem has also informed its customers via email, notifying them about the suspension of services and guiding them on how to claim any remaining balances in their Careem wallets.
Although ride-hailing services will no longer be available, the company’s Careem Care Centers will remain operational until September 2025. These centers will continue to assist customers and drivers in resolving any pending issues.
Careem has assured users that detailed instructions on how to withdraw or utilize their wallet balances will be provided in the coming days.
The Dubai-based company, which launched in Pakistan in 2015, was acquired by the American ride-hailing giant Uber a few years ago. Uber had already ceased all operations in Pakistan in 2022 following the acquisition.
With Careem exiting the market, industry experts expect a surge in demand for other ride-hailing platforms such as Yango, inDrive, and local startup Bykea, which have been steadily growing in popularity over the past three years.
Careem’s exit marks the end of a decade-long chapter in Pakistan’s urban mobility landscape.
