China Reaffirms Commitment to Peaceful Reunification with Taiwan

Beijing: China has reiterated its commitment to achieving a peaceful reunification with Taiwan but has also vowed to take all necessary actions to protect its territorial integrity, the country’s foreign ministry stated on Monday.

Beijing considers Taiwan part of its territory, despite opposition from Taipei’s government. Taiwan’s President, Lai Ching-te, maintains that only the island’s people have the right to determine their future.

Speaking at a press briefing, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning emphasized China’s willingness to pursue peaceful reunification with "sincerity and maximum effort." However, she also reaffirmed the country's firm stance against any moves toward Taiwanese independence and external intervention.

The statement followed remarks made by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi last week, in which he asserted that Taiwan would "never be a country" and that supporting its independence constituted interference in China's internal affairs.

In recent years, China has intensified military activities near Taiwan, including conducting military exercises, raising concerns about a potential use of force to assert control over the island.

Mao also called on the United States to halt arms sales to Taiwan and end military interactions with the island. She stressed that the Taiwan issue remains a fundamental concern in China-U.S. relations, calling it an "insurmountable red line."

The U.S. has been Taiwan’s primary weapons supplier despite the absence of formal diplomatic ties. However, unlike its alliances with Japan and South Korea, Washington has no formal defense treaty with Taiwan.
