China Responds Firmly to Zelensky’s Claims About Chinese Fighters in Ukraine

Beijing: China issued a strong warning on Thursday, cautioning all parties in the Ukraine conflict against making "irresponsible remarks." The statement followed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s claim that Chinese nationals were being recruited by Russia to fight in the war.

Zelensky said that Ukrainian authorities had identified 155 Chinese individuals allegedly involved in the war on Russia’s side, and further claimed that two Chinese soldiers had been captured by Ukrainian forces in the Donetsk region.

In response, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian, speaking at a regular press briefing, refrained from naming Zelensky or Ukraine directly but urged “relevant parties” to view China’s role objectively and responsibly.

"We advise the parties concerned to remain clear-headed and recognize China’s position accurately," Lin said.

Beijing continues to present itself as a neutral actor in the Ukraine conflict, despite growing criticism from the West over its close relationship with Moscow, which includes significant economic and diplomatic cooperation.

Zelensky has accused Moscow of "pulling China into the war," an allegation strongly rejected by the Kremlin. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters that Zelensky’s claims were incorrect, praising China as a "partner, friend, and comrade" with a balanced stance on the war.

Meanwhile, Lin reiterated Beijing’s policy that Chinese citizens must not get involved in foreign conflicts. “China has always demanded its citizens avoid participation in armed hostilities in any form,” he said. “We are not participants in the Ukraine crisis. On the contrary, we support and promote peaceful solutions.”
