Karachi: The Sindh Health Department has confirmed four deaths related to COVID-19 in Karachi, all of which involved patients over the age of 60. According to officials at a private hospital, the deceased individuals were also suffering from other underlying health conditions, contributing to complications during treatment.
Infectious diseases expert Dr. Faisal Mahmood stated that there has been a noticeable surge in COVID-19 cases over the past two to three weeks. The symptoms seen in recent patients are consistent with those observed in previous waves—cough, flu, fever, and body aches.
Authorities have urged the public to take preventive measures seriously once again, including wearing masks in crowded places and taking extra precautions to protect children and the elderly.
The Sindh Health Department clarified that COVID-19 was not the sole cause of death in these recent cases, emphasizing that all four patients were already dealing with multiple health issues. Officials cautioned against creating unnecessary panic by attributing the deaths solely to COVID-19, noting that the virus is now generally treated as a common infection globally.
COVID-19, which originated in Wuhan, China, in December 2019, rapidly spread to nearly 185 countries by April 2020, infecting millions and causing over a hundred thousand deaths worldwide. Pakistan reported its first case in Karachi on February 26, 2020.
Following the global rollout of COVID-19 vaccines, billions of people have been immunized, and the virus has since been managed as a more routine health concern. However, the recent uptick in cases is a reminder that vigilance remains essential.
