MANILA: The Department of Health (DOH) announced on Tuesday that all hospitals nationwide have been placed on "Code White" alert in preparation for any potential health emergencies during the Holy Week break, especially those related to the ongoing extreme heat.
Speaking at a Malacañang briefing, Health Secretary Ted Herbosa said that many people are expected to head to beaches or take long road trips during the holiday, putting them at risk of heat-related illnesses.
"Code White means hospitals are fully prepared to respond to any incidents that may arise as people travel or gather during Holy Week," Herbosa explained.
He advised the public to take precautions, such as applying sunscreen, staying hydrated, and avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun. He also emphasized water safety, warning about the recurring cases of drowning during the holiday season.
Herbosa issued additional reminders for motorists, urging them not to drink or text while driving and to strictly obey traffic laws.
Regarding heat stroke, he warned of symptoms like intense thirst, cold sweats, and eventual collapse if left untreated. He stressed the need to cool down immediately and drink water when feeling weak or dehydrated. Vulnerable groups, such as young children and the elderly, should be kept in cool environments to avoid health risks.
"If not addressed early, heat stroke can become a medical emergency," Herbosa added.
