Islamabad: As temperatures rise across the country, many coffee lovers battle common myths suggesting coffee isn’t suitable for summer. These widespread misconceptions, such as the idea that coffee dehydrates you, causes overheating, or interferes with sleep, often discourage people from enjoying their favourite brew during the warmer months. However, recent scientific findings suggest that moderate coffee consumption in summer is safe and can be part of a healthy routine.

One of the most repeated claims is that coffee dehydrates you due to its caffeine content. At the same time, caffeine has mild diuretic properties. Studies published in PLOS ONE in 2014 reveal that drinking up to four cups daily contributes to hydration, similar to water.

Experts recommend pairing coffee with water, especially if you’re spending time outdoors. A helpful tip: add a pinch of sea salt to iced coffee to replenish electrolytes lost through sweat.

Another myth says hot coffee increases body heat, making you uncomfortable in summer. Surprisingly, a 2016 University of Ottawa study found that hot drinks can cool you down by promoting sweat and evaporation, especially in dry climates. Still, iced coffee, cold brews, and frappes remain excellent refreshing alternatives.

Some believe that coffee causes overheating or heatstroke. The Mayo Clinic clarifies that heatstroke stems from prolonged heat exposure and dehydration, not from drinking coffee. Caffeine may slightly raise your heart rate, but this effect is mild for most healthy individuals. Staying hydrated while consuming coffee is key, particularly during outdoor activities.

There’s also a notion that coffee is less healthy in summer because of its warming nature. This is false; coffee remains rich in antioxidants and health-promoting compounds regardless of the season.

A 2018 study on Nutrients confirmed coffee’s year-round anti-inflammatory benefits. Summer-friendly tips include swapping sugar-heavy add-ons for natural sweeteners and making coffee smoothies with fruits and plant-based milk.

Lastly, concerns about coffee affecting sleep patterns in summer are often due to longer daylight hours. However, sleep experts advise limiting caffeine to six to eight hours before bed, regardless of the season. Enjoy your brew in the morning or early afternoon, and opt for decaf in the evening if needed.

In short, there’s no scientific reason to ditch coffee during summer. Myths around dehydration, overheating, and disrupted sleep are largely unfounded.

Experts recommend drinking in moderation, staying hydrated, and experimenting with hot and cold coffee options. Whether blended into smoothies or served over ice, coffee can still be a healthy and refreshing part of your summer.
