NEW YORK: Dr. Mohammed Al-Issa, Secretary-General of the Muslim World League (MWL) and Chairman of the Association of Muslim Scholars, delivered the keynote address at the United Nations General Assembly for the International Day to Combat Islamophobia on Friday.
In his speech, Dr. Al-Issa highlighted that Islamophobia is one of the most dangerous forms of hate speech, warning that it not only targets Muslims but also fosters extremism and social division. He emphasized that this trend threatens inclusive citizenship, a core principle enshrined in modern constitutions and international law.
Citing credible statistics, Dr. Al-Issa pointed to the rise in crimes against Muslims, including discrimination, exclusion, and the denial of basic rights. He also noted the marginalization of Muslim communities, which hinders their integration into society.
Dr. Al-Issa stressed that nearly two billion Muslims worldwide embody the true essence of Islam, which promotes peace and understanding. He referenced the Quranic verse: "O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another." (Quran 49:13)
He declared that Islamophobia is not merely a religious issue but a humanitarian crisis that threatens global peace and coexistence. He stated, "When we speak from this international platform, we are not just defending Islam but also standing up for universal human values."
Dr. Al-Issa condemned divisive rhetoric and rejected hate-driven political campaigns, media bias, and policies that incite fear and division. He firmly stated: "No to making religious followers targets of hate and discrimination. No to racist electoral slogans. No to fear-mongering for political gain. No to media outlets that fuel intolerance. No to platforms that spread falsehoods. And not linking terrorism to a faith followed by nearly two billion people."
He also rejected extremists who distort religion for their own agendas and urged the world to understand the true teachings of Islam, which promote peace and harmony. Dr. Al-Issa called on the international community to foster a world based on tolerance and understanding, emphasizing the role of educational and cultural institutions in raising awareness, particularly among youth.
During his visit, Dr. Al-Issa held bilateral discussions with UN General Assembly President Dennis Francis to address the rise of Islamophobia, its implications, and global concerns.
Dr. Al-Issa's invitation to deliver the keynote address reflects the global recognition of MWL’s role in combating Islamophobia, promoting religious tolerance, and strengthening interfaith dialogue.
