Electricity Theft Worth Rs. 12.5 Billion Uncovered in Pakistan

Islamabad: In a startling revelation, the Ministry of Energy has disclosed that electricity theft worth Rs. 12.5 billion was detected in Pakistan during 2024. This alarming statistic has compelled the government to adopt stringent measures to combat the rampant issue.

The crackdown has already led to significant action, including the registration of 216,000 First Information Reports (FIRs) and the arrest of 62,452 suspects allegedly involved in electricity theft. These measures are part of a comprehensive strategy to address the financial and operational losses caused by this malpractice.

To strengthen its efforts, the Ministry has begun establishing specialized Distribution System Operations (DSO) units. These units are designed to enhance monitoring and enforcement capabilities, aiming to identify and penalize those engaged in illegal electricity connections.

A spokesperson for the Ministry emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “Electricity theft not only imposes a heavy financial burden on the national economy but also disrupts the stability and reliability of the power supply. The government is committed to taking all necessary actions to ensure fair distribution and a sustainable energy future.”

The Ministry’s proactive approach reflects its dedication to addressing the challenges in the energy sector and fostering accountability. These initiatives are expected to deter electricity theft, improve revenue recovery, and contribute to a more efficient and reliable power supply for consumers across Pakistan.

As the government continues its crackdown, it urges citizens to report any illegal activities related to electricity theft and cooperate in building a transparent and sustainable energy system.
