TECHNOLOGY– Neuralink Corp., the brain-computer interface startup founded by Elon Musk, has successfully implanted its third brain device in a human patient, marking another significant milestone in its quest to develop innovative treatments for neurological conditions. Musk revealed this achievement during a live-streamed event in Las Vegas, held earlier this week.
In his statement, Musk shared, “We’ve got now three humans with Neuralinks implanted, and they’re all working well.” Neuralink aims to conduct 20 to 30 more implants in 2025 as part of its ongoing trials and research. The company is actively working on devices that could potentially help patients suffering from paralysis, ALS, and other severe neurological conditions.
What Is Neuralink's Brain Implant?
Neuralink’s device, which requires the implantation of electrodes into the brain tissue, is a part of a growing field of experimental brain-computer interface technology. These devices, while still in the early stages of development, aim to allow patients to regain some degree of independence and control over their environment. The procedure typically involves opening the skull to place the electrodes directly into the brain.
Ongoing Studies and Future Plans
Currently, Neuralink is running two U.S.-based studies registered with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The Prime Study, which involves five patients, focuses on allowing paralyzed individuals to control external devices like computers and smartphones using only their minds. The second trial, Convoy, which involves three patients, focuses on enabling users to control assistive robotic arms, offering patients new opportunities for mobility and interaction.
Neuralink’s goal is to continue pushing the boundaries of brain-computer interface technology, ultimately providing life-changing benefits to individuals with severe disabilities.
