Quetta: The detention of Dr. Mahrang Baloch, head of the Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC), and fellow activist Beebagr Baloch has been extended for another month under Section 3 of the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) law.
Confirming the development, Dr. Mahrang Baloch's legal counsel, Advocate Imran Baloch, stated that the extension was issued by the Balochistan Home and Tribal Affairs Department. He explained that the initial detention period was set to expire on Monday, prompting the authorities to prolong the custody.
Dr. Mahrang, Beebagr, and other arrested BYC leaders and members are currently held at the Quetta District Jail.
According to Advocate Baloch, the jail authorities officially informed him on Monday of the one-month extension in their clients’ detention. He further clarified that while the initial order for MPO-based detention is issued by the Deputy Commissioner, any extensions are handled by the Home Department.
Imran Baloch also revealed that the arrests of other BYC officials and members—including Gulzadi Baloch, Sabghatullah Shah Ji, and Beebarg Baloch—have been challenged in court.
He added that a total of approximately 150 BYC activists have been detained under the MPO, and a formal petition against their arrests will be submitted by Thursday.
