Sri Muktsar Sahib: A devastating explosion rocked a firecracker manufacturing and packaging unit in Punjab’s Sri Muktsar Sahib district during the early hours of Friday, leaving at least five people dead and more than 34 others injured, police officials confirmed.
The incident occurred between midnight and 1:00 a.m. in a two-story structure located on the Singhawali-Kotli Road. Emergency services were swiftly deployed following the blasts, according to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Jaspal Singh. “So far, five bodies have been pulled from the rubble. Rescue operations are ongoing to ensure that no one remains trapped,” Singh reporters.
The injured were promptly transported to nearby hospitals. While several victims are receiving treatment at Civil Hospital in Badal, those in more critical condition have been referred to AIIMS in Bathinda. Medical authorities have stated that all patients are currently in stable condition.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the explosions may have been triggered by the ignition of highly flammable materials stored inside the facility. Forensic experts have been called in to assist in determining the exact cause.
Local authorities have sealed off the area as a precaution and have urged the public to stay away until further notice. The Punjab state government is expected to release an official statement soon, including information about compensation for the victims and their families.
