Food Prices Skyrocket in Gaza Amid Two-Month Blockade

Gaza: In Gaza’s markets, food prices have surged to crisis levels after nearly two months of blockade that began on March 2, 2025, when Israeli forces sealed all crossings and stopped shipments of food, water, and medicine.

Before October 2023 a kilogram of flour cost $6.70, but as of April 2025 it sells for $72.60, cooking oil has jumped from $1.90 to $12.60 per litre, and a can of beef has more than doubled from $1.90 to $4, according to local traders and aid agencies.

This dramatic inflation reflects the severe shortages caused by the blockade—imposed to pressure Hamas to release captives—and the resumption of offensive operations on March 18, leaving families on the brink of starvation and prompting urgent calls from UN relief officials to reopen supply routes and lift the siege.
