Global Leaders React to New U.S. Tariffs Imposed by President Trump

Brussels: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has warned that the newly imposed U.S. tariffs will have an immediate impact on global trade, describing them as a significant blow to the world economy.

“These tariffs will take effect from day one, and their consequences will be felt immediately,” von der Leyen stated. She emphasized that Europe remains united in its response to the economic challenge posed by the U.S. decision. “All of Europe stands together. If you target one of us, you target all of us. Our unity is our strength,” she asserted.

The European Union is preparing retaliatory measures in response to the tariffs imposed by President Trump, including the first package targeting steel imports. Von der Leyen further indicated that if negotiations with the U.S. fail, additional countermeasures will be introduced.

Global Backlash Against U.S. Tariff Decision

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni criticized the U.S. decision but expressed her intent to engage in dialogue with President Trump. Meanwhile, Spanish Prime Minister Michael Martin labeled the move “disappointing” and warned that it would benefit no one.

South Korea, which faces a 25% tariff on exports to the U.S., acknowledged the growing reality of a global trade war. Acting President Han Duck-soo stated that his government is considering strategic measures to address the economic crisis triggered by the tariffs.

In Israel, economic officials expressed shock over the U.S. decision to impose a 17% tariff on Israeli exports. A senior official, speaking to local media, revealed that they had expected continued tariff exemptions given Israel’s decision to lift all tariffs on American imports.

China has strongly condemned the new tariffs, with the Global Times branding them as “economic blackmail.” The Chinese Ministry of Commerce also voiced its opposition, pledging to take countermeasures if necessary.

“It has been proven in the past that increasing tariffs does not solve the U.S.’s own economic issues. Instead, it harms American interests while disrupting global trade and economic stability,” a ministry spokesperson stated. Additionally, Chinese diplomats have raised concerns over the inclusion of Taiwan as a separate entity in the U.S. tariff list, reaffirming their stance that “Taiwan is an integral part of China.”

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese criticized the U.S. move, calling it “completely unnecessary” and lacking any logical basis. “This is not how friends should behave,” he remarked, referencing the existing free trade agreement between Australia and the U.S. Despite the tariffs, he ruled out retaliatory trade measures, expressing a preference for diplomatic discussions.

India’s response was more measured. A senior government official described the situation as a “mixed bag” rather than a setback. The country’s commerce ministry is currently analyzing the new tariffs and exploring possible responses.
