Gunfire at UN Compound in Kabul: One Dead, One Injured

Kabul: A shooting incident involving a Taliban security force member at the United Nations’ largest compound in Kabul resulted in one fatality and one injury, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) confirmed in a statement on Monday.

According to the statement, the incident occurred on Sunday when a member of the Taliban-run security forces stationed outside the compound opened fire. The individual was killed in the exchange, while an international security guard contracted by the UN sustained injuries.

UNAMA clarified that the security personnel contracted by the organization did not retaliate. The motive behind the gunfire remains unclear, and both the Taliban authorities and the UN have launched investigations.

Interior Ministry spokesperson Abdul Mateen Qaniee confirmed the details, stating that a Taliban guard was killed and a UN contractor was wounded.

Following the incident, Taliban officials temporarily restricted movement in and out of the compound, which accommodates multiple UN agencies, funds, and international staff. The restrictions have since been lifted.
