January 6, 2025 - Today marks the 11th anniversary of Aitzaz Hasan's extraordinary act of bravery, a story that continues to inspire millions worldwide. Born in 1999 in the Hangu district of Pakistan, Aitzaz belonged to a humble family and was a student at a local government school.
On January 6, 2014, Aitzaz displayed unmatched courage in the face of a suicide bomber who approached his school. That morning, Aitzaz, along with two friends, arrived late for school and was denied entry to the morning assembly. With around 2,000 students gathered in the assembly ground.
During this time, a suspicious man approached the school gate and claimed he wanted to enroll as a student. However, one of Aitzaz's friends noticed a detonator in the man's possession and rushed to warn the students. Meanwhile, Aitzaz confronted the bomber directly, attempting to prevent him from entering the school.
Realizing the threat, Aitzaz chose to sacrifice his life to protect his fellow students. He grappled with the bomber and ultimately hugged him to detonate the explosive device, preventing a massive tragedy. His selfless act saved hundreds of lives but cost him his own.
Aitzaz’s parents shared that he was often teased by peers for his physical appearance, which made him feel isolated. Yet, no one could have imagined that his courage and determination would make him a national hero.
In recognition of his bravery, the Government of Pakistan awarded Aitzaz Hasan the Tamgha-e-Shujaat (Medal of Bravery). He was also named Herald's Person of the Year in 2014. His life and sacrifice were later immortalized in a film, serving as a poignant reminder of his heroism.
Aitzaz Hasan’s story stands tall among tales of courage in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a region that has witnessed decades of violence and strife. His sacrifice remains a symbol of hope, proving that humanity and valor still thrive in the darkest times.
Today, as we honor his memory, Aitzaz Hasan continues to inspire generations to prioritize the greater good, even at the cost of personal sacrifice.
