RIYADH: The Saudi Pro League's second edition of Derby Week kicks off this weekend, featuring three blockbuster rivalries that could shape the 2024/25 Roshn Saudi League (RSL) season.
The action begins Friday with the Capital Derby at Kingdom Arena, where Al Hilal hosts Al Nassr. Al Hilal sits second with 57 points, trailing leaders Al Ittihad by four. A win would keep their title hopes alive and apply pressure ahead of Al Ittihad’s own derby on Saturday.
“We’re chasing the title, and any slip now could be decisive,” said Al Hilal manager Jorge Jesus. Captain Salem Al Dawsari added, “Against Al Nassr, there’s no room for anything less than full intensity.”
Al Nassr, third with 51 points, aims to secure a spot in the AFC Champions League Elite. “This isn’t just a rivalry, it’s a crucial game,” said manager Stefano Pioli. Defender Aymeric Laporte emphasized, “We have to do our best to win.”
Superstars including Cristiano Ronaldo, Sadio Mané, Aleksandar Mitrović, and Rúben Neves are expected to feature in what could be a derby classic.
Derby Week continues Saturday with the Eastern Province Derby between Al Qadsiah and Al Ettifaq at Prince Mohammed bin Fahd Stadium. Newly promoted Al Qadsiah, level on points with Al Nassr, are in the race for continental qualification and the King’s Cup title. Al Ettifaq, under returning coach Saad Al Shehri, aim to build on their recent resurgence.
The week concludes with the Sea Derby in Jeddah, as leaders Al Ittihad face Al Ahli at Alinma Stadium. Al Ittihad, on 81 points, are chasing a league and cup double, led by Karim Benzema and coach Laurent Blanc. Al Ahli, fifth in the table, remain in AFC qualification contention, with 16-goal striker Ivan Toney leading their charge.
With passionate crowds, major stakes, and star-studded lineups, Derby Week reaffirms its status as a highlight of Saudi football, drawing fans both locally and globally.
