New Delhi, April 24 — India is in the grip of an intense heatwave as temperatures in several regions have crossed a searing 44°C, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue red and orange alerts across multiple states. The IMD has warned that the ongoing heatwave could have "severe health impacts" and urged citizens to take precautions.
Red Alerts in Northern and Central India
States including Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and parts of Maharashtra and Delhi NCR are facing extreme heat conditions. Churu in Rajasthan recorded a maximum of 46.3°C, the highest in the country this season so far.
"The prevailing atmospheric conditions, coupled with dry northwesterly winds, are leading to dangerously high temperatures. These heatwave conditions are likely to persist for the next 4–5 days," said Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director General, IMD.
Health Advisory Issued
The IMD and the Ministry of Health have issued advisories urging people to stay indoors between 12 p.m. and 4 p.m., avoid strenuous activity, and stay hydrated. The heatwave is particularly dangerous for children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing medical conditions.
Hospitals in several districts are reporting a rise in heat-related illnesses, including dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke.
Power Demand Surges, Water Shortages Loom
As air conditioner and cooler usage spikes, several states are experiencing record power demand. Delhi’s peak demand crossed 7,200 MW, prompting authorities to prepare for possible load shedding. Meanwhile, water shortages have already begun to affect urban and rural areas alike, especially in Maharashtra and parts of Karnataka.
Schools Shut, Exams Rescheduled
In a proactive move, state governments in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Odisha have temporarily closed schools or shifted classes to early morning hours. Some competitive exams have also been postponed due to the heat.
Climate Change at Play?
Meteorologists and climate scientists attribute the severity of this heatwave to a combination of El Niño effects and long-term climate change. “We are seeing a pattern of earlier and more intense heatwaves, which is a clear signal of global warming,” said Dr. Roxy Mathew Koll, climate scientist at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology.
Relief on the Horizon?
According to the IMD, a slight dip in temperature is expected over the weekend due to a possible western disturbance, but until then, the heatwave will continue to intensify across the Indo-Gangetic plains and central India.
