According to sources, a Rs 5,000 crore betting racket is said to have been pegged on the Champions Trophy final between India and New Zealand that was held in Dubai.
It appears that most of the international bookmakers, along with some underworld syndicates, were betting heavily on India.
Sources reveal that this is where all the big bookies fly in over to bet on high-stake matches. The D-Company gang under the leadership of Dawood Ibrahim has long been known for the illegal betting on cricket matches.
Few weeks ago, the Delhi Police Crime Branch arrested five big bookies in connection with betting at the Champions Trophy semi-finals. During the questioning, they took them to Dubai, where the betting activity was said to be controlled.
Arrested were Parveen Kochhar and Sanjay Kumar, who were caught placing live betting through electronic devices. An important figure in this syndicate, Kochhar had created what is called master IDs using an online betting website and sold these IDs to punters, receiving a commission for every transaction. His operation had been running for the last two years from a rented property in Delhi.
Chhotu Bansal, who started a betting app in Canada and turned out to be one of the key players from Dubai, and Vinay, who supplied live feed from the cricket grounds, are also involved. More names, like Bobby, Golu, and Jitu, are being linked with the syndicate.
Investigations are raging from the authorities, and the police recovered more than Rs 22 lakh cash during the arrest. It reflects the increasing menace of illegal cricket betting while Dubai acts as the focal point for such crimes.
