Indian Fisherman Commits Suicide in Karachi’s Malir Jail

KARACHI: An Indian fisherman, 52-year-old Goru Ram Anand, committed suicide in Karachi’s Malir Jail, the jail superintendent confirmed on Wednesday.

According to Superintendent Arshad Hussain, the deceased was found hanging in the washroom of his barrack. "All Indian prisoners are confined in separate barracks. On Tuesday night, the fisherman went to the washroom and ended his life," he stated.

Jail officials reported that the on-duty doctor examined the prisoner and declared him dead at 2:20 AM. Later, a magistrate conducted an inquiry and directed that the body be shifted to the Edhi Foundation’s cold storage in Sohrab Goth until further legal formalities were completed.

The deceased had been arrested by the Docks police in February 2022 for illegally entering Pakistan’s maritime boundary. Later that month, a magistrate in West Karachi ordered his transfer to Malir Jail.

Last month, on February 22, 22 Indian fishermen were released from Malir Jail after completing their sentences and were handed over to Indian authorities at the Wagah Border. These fishermen had been detained for unintentionally crossing into Pakistan’s territorial waters.
