Italy clinched a sensational 3-0 win over the Netherlands in the Davis Cup final on Sunday, with Jannik Sinner securing the decisive victory. The world number one defeated Tallon Griekspoor 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 to seal the title after Matteo Berrettini had earlier put Italy ahead with a convincing 6-4, 6-2 win over Botic van de Zandschulp.
Sinner’s victory capped a remarkable year for the Italian, which included titles at the Australian Open, US Open, and ATP Finals. "The whole team is amazing, we tried to defend our title and we have done it, so we’re extremely happy," said Sinner. This victory marked Italy’s third Davis Cup win and made them the first team to successfully defend the title since the Czech Republic in 2013.
Berrettini, who had battled back from an ankle injury, also played a crucial role in Italy’s success. His solid performances in both singles and doubles helped Italy maintain their dominant position throughout the tournament. The Netherlands, competing in their first final in 104 years, fought hard but ultimately couldn’t overcome the formidable Italian duo.
