What you need to know about The National Dog Show? 

The National Dog Show, which features thousands of dog breeds on display, is held annually on Thanksgiving by the Kennel Club of Philadelphia's and broadcasted on NBC every year since 2002.It’s been around since 1879 and the competition has been held annually since 1933, according to NBC. 

Winner of the  National Dog Show:

Vito, a pug from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, won Best in Show at this year's National Dog Show, earning a $20,000 prize. The breed's first time taking home the top prize at the show since it was first broadcasted on television.  Vito defeated over 1,900 dogs from over 200 breeds and varieties that participated in this year's competition. 

Vito defeated six other finalists. In the terrier group, Verde, a Welsh terrier, won second place and was named Reserve Best in Show. 


When Vito, heard the award, he lifted his neck to look up at his handler, Michael Scott, as if he was trying to figure out what all the excitement was about. Show judge George asked Scott if the pug was aware that he had won, stating that Vito had a lovely expression and movement. 

Scott said, "He's very smug." "I think he knows."

The other finalists Best in Breed and overall Best in Show competitions included these groups:

Herding: Rupert (Berger Picard)

Working: Monty (Giant Schnauzer)

Sporting: Houston (Clumber Spaniel)

Hound: The Zit (Ibizan Hound)

Terrier: Verde (Welsh Terrier)

Non-sporting: JJ (Lhasa Apso)


Judgement Criteria:

National Dog Show contestants were judged on their general look, temperament, and adherence to the breed's official standards.


Where can you watch the Dog Show?

If you missed the 2024 Dog Show broadcast on Thursday, NBC says that it will also be available after Thanksgiving on Peacock, the network's streaming service.
