London: Lauren Price decisively outpointed Natasha Jonas at the Royal Albert Hall, cementing her status as a unified welterweight champion in a defining moment for women's boxing.
The 30-year-old Welsh fighter's speed and sharpness proved too much for the 40-year-old Jonas, who struggled to find her rhythm across 10 rounds. The judges scored it 98-93, 100-90, and 98-92 in price’s favor.
In just her ninth professional fight, the Olympic gold medallist retained her WBA title while claiming Jonas' WBC and IBF belts. She now eyes an undisputed title shot against the winner of Mikaela Mayer vs. Sandy Ryan later this month.
"Tash is one of the best in the division, but I believe I can become undisputed and create a great legacy," Price said.
Jonas, a two-weight world champion, hinted at retirement after suffering her third career loss in 19 bouts. "I'll take time to reflect and be with my daughter," she said.
