Malaysia to Expand Trade Ties Amid U.S. Tariff Uncertainty, Says PM Anwar

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is set to strengthen its trade relationships with countries such as China, Russia, and Brazil instead of waiting for potential trade tariffs from the United States, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim stated on Tuesday.

Speaking in parliament, Anwar emphasized that relying on U.S. trade decisions could negatively impact Malaysia, especially amid ongoing uncertainties. He referenced U.S. President Donald Trump's recent decision to temporarily suspend tariffs on Canada and Mexico for 30 days while maintaining those on China.

Anwar cautioned against hasty reactions to the evolving trade landscape, citing geopolitical uncertainties. However, he stressed that Malaysia must take proactive measures to expand its network of trading partners.

"We must act decisively to diversify our trade relationships and not remain passive in the face of global uncertainties," Anwar stated.
