Ningbo: Malaysia’s Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik clinched the men’s doubles title at the Badminton Asia Championships on Sunday, defeating China’s Chen Boyang and Liu Yi 21-19, 21-17 in straight sets.
The win marks Malaysia’s first title in the tournament since 2007, when Choong Tan Fook and Lee Wan Wah triumphed.
Earlier in the day, Thailand’s reigning world champion Kunlavut Vitidsarn was crowned men’s singles champion after China’s Lu Guangzu retired injured in the second set.
In women’s doubles, China’s world No. 1 pair Liu Shengshu and Tan Ning thrilled the home crowd with a 21-15, 21-19 win over Japan’s Nami Matsuyama and Chiharu Shida, their opponents’ first loss of the year.
The match followed controversy surrounding Shida, who recently urged Chinese fans to stop stalking her, saying she felt “very scared.”
Meanwhile, Hong Kong China’s Tang Chun Man and Tse Ying Suet secured the mixed doubles gold, defeating Japan’s Hiroki Midorikawa and Natsu Saito 2-1 in a gripping final.
