Massive Earthquake in Myanmar: Over 2,000 Dead, Rescue Efforts Continue

Burma: According to Chinese state news agency Xinhua, four people, including a child and a pregnant woman, have been rescued from the rubble of a collapsed building in Mandalay following a devastating earthquake.

The death toll has now surpassed 2,000, with official figures reporting 2,056 fatalities and over 3,900 injuries. Additionally, at least 270 people remain missing as search and rescue operations continue.

Neighboring countries, including China, India, and Thailand, have joined Myanmar in providing aid and relief efforts to support those affected by the disaster. The World Health Organization (WHO) spokesperson Margaret Harris confirmed that Myanmar’s hospitals, many of which have been severely damaged, are overwhelmed by the increasing number of casualties.

In response to the tragedy, the Myanmar government has declared a week-long national mourning period.

However, reports from rebel groups suggest that Myanmar’s military has conducted ground operations in the earthquake-affected areas, raising concerns among international observers. The United Nations has issued a warning to the military, accusing it of violating human rights amid the crisis.

Since seizing power, Myanmar’s military has imposed strict restrictions on foreign journalists and banned independent local media outlets, further complicating access to reliable information from the affected regions.
